Families living with addiction find it hard to believe getting effective help requires long term drug rehab treatment. I talk to parents of addict in their 30's and 40's still living at home who have suffered and struggled for literally decades think that these things can be overcome with outpatient programs or weekly meetings.

Decades of living a life of non production , no direction and no purpose. And this is to overcome and handled in a few short hours or weeks? Can you imagine? It takes confronting the problem and its very obvious that some families cannot see it or are willing too see to even look. Drug addiction doesnt happen over night, alcohol addiction either. When abusing any substance becomes more important than things in life that really matter, like family, job and being self supporting its time to take a look at whats really going on.

As an example most people think an alcoholic can simply attend short term detox versus long term alcohol treatment and then go back to life as normal.  That's where people fail. I lost a cousin with the same outlook so I know what its like to lose a family member to alcohol addiction. He never really stood back and did what it took to overcome his problem, nor gave himself the oppurtunity to really take a look at the inner demon driving the addiction.

Please don't wait until its too late, do something and when you do, find a long term drug and alcohol treatment program that handles all the issues surrounding your loved one's addiction.

In looking for drug addiction treatment program many people think they are going to actually get over addiction in next to no time. If people really knew the mechanics of addiction, both mental and physical they would soon realize drug and alcohol addiction has the best chance of success in a long term drug treatment program, although many would like to think otherwise.

I am an addiction counselor and have worked with thousands of families in getting into to an addiction treatment program. Its just not that easy. Its scientifically proven that abuse can happen immediatly and addiction soon after, but the behavior learned during the addictive lifestyle can take years to overcome and basically the addict needs to be reprogrammed on a conscious level of course.

If you have been used to doing things in a certain way for a long stretch of time, even simple daily routines, like how your brush your teeth, or tie your shoes, its almost impossible to retrain yourself to do these things another way. So even with these simple little task it can take days and weeks to change.

Have you ever heard of a someone breaking their arm and having to retrain themselves to basically everything. Imagine trying to do that with someone who has had years of substance abuse and probably criminal behavior. Thats the magnitude of change a competent drug addiction treatment program has to deliver to you. Thats not done in a few weeks, but takes a few months.
